The Area
The Coastal Area
Half Moon Bay rests on the Pacific Coast between forested hills and some of the most beautiful coastlines that California has to offer. It is located approximately 28 miles south of San Francisco and lies within the western most portion of San Mateo County.
The historic downtown is home to numerous shops, art galleries, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, and other businesses. Local beaches and parks can be accessed by pedestrians, bicyclists and equestrians. Golf can be enjoyed at two of California’s finest courses. The City and coastside are home to numerous nurseries and farms. The Pumpkin Festival held in October draws hundreds of thousands of people to the coast to enjoy its panoramic vistas, fine cuisine, arts, crafts and genuine hospitality. Temperatures are mild and the valleys are rich. Half Moon Bay and the coastside are proud of their agriculture & floriculture center where roadside stands sell locally grown fruit and vegetables - the most well known in the area being artichokes and brussel sprouts. You cannot top the fresh seafood available everywhere in restaurants or buy it directly from the boats in Pillar Point Harbor, to take home and prepare yourself. Residents of this charming community live a lifestyle that many think no longer exists in California.
Located in Moss Beach are the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, a marine sanctuary; the Half Moon Bay Airport, the historic Moss Beach Distillery; and the Seal Cove Inn, a destination lodging property.
Temperatures are mild throughout the year. Due to the marine air currents off of the Pacific Ocean, Moss Beach experiences superior ambient air quality. Situated along the coast of Moss Beach is the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, a California designated area of Special Biological Significance. The Reserve boasts a scenic bluff top trail through ancient cypress groves overlooking the Pacific Ocean, interesting tide pools and a variety of significant marine animals and birds.
Although the term "Barbary Coast" is derived from the 18th century reference to the wild coast of North Africa, it has become synonymous with pirates and debauchery. Thus, during the Gold Rush era of San Francisco, the nine-block area bounded by Montgomery Street, Washington Street, Stockton Street and Broadway became known as the Barbary Coast. Abandoned ships ultimately sunk and were covered with landfill and have continued to be uncovered during construction as late as 2001. The Financial District, predominately a commercial center of historic banks built on Gold Rush fortunes and high-rise office buildings, offers a smattering of upscale apartments and condominiums - and the demand is growing. Four-star, expense account restaurants and hotels, as well as services of all kinds, are never more than a block away. Green space can be found if you're persistent: Jackson Square Park, near the Embarcadero Center, is the perfect place for a refreshing, sunny picnic lunch. Hidden between the famous TransAmerica Pyramid and another high rise, you'll find TransAmerica Redwood Park, a tiny sanctuary where busy stockbrokers take a break to watch Chinese grandmas practice their Tai Chi.
